ABOUT

MCA is excited to announce the return of our outdoor choral festival, GATHER, on Saturday, September 28, 2024 at the Lyric Theatre in Assiniboine Park (Winnipeg/Treaty One Territory), and we want YOUR CHOIR to be a part of it! This FREE day-long outdoor event will run from approximately 9:00am to 4:00pm and will showcase a variety of choirs and ensembles as part of Winnipeg 150: City of Song, an initiative designed to engage the public in group singing performances and activities in celebration of the city’s 150th anniversary.

 

Originally held in 2022, this second rendition of the festival will feature rotating choir performances and workshops throughout the day on the main stage, while attendees experience food vendors, an artisan/maker market, games, and creative spaces set up around the grounds to complete the celebratory atmosphere. Above all, GATHER is an opportunity for the choral community to come together to connect and to enjoy group singing!

 

We invite choirs and singing groups of all backgrounds, music styles, skill levels, and voice parts, from any part of the province, to apply to perform at GATHER! There is no application fee, but choirs must have renewed their MCA membership by August 31 to perform in the festival. If your choir is not a current MCA member, you must commit to registering your choir for membership by August 31 in order to apply.

 

WHAT’S INCLUDED?

  • Guaranteed 15-minute performance slot on the Lyric Theatre mainstage (3-4 songs)

  • Opportunity to support other choirs for their festival performances

  • Free participation in choral workshops throughout the day

  • Access to makers market, arts & crafts and games areas

  • Exclusive performer souvenirs for singers

  • Use of instruments/equipment on stage:

    • Choral risers (6 sections of 3 steps)

    • Electric keyboard, drum kit, bass amp

    • Up to three solo mics

    • Note: Groups are responsible for providing additional instruments and/or equipment needed for their performance

 

IMPORTANT! Before applying to participate, we invite groups to consider whether their singers can spend time at the festival before and/or after their performance. Since GATHER is a community event, an important element of participating in the festival is attending performances of other groups and participating in additional parts of the festival. While not mandatory, we ask that in a spirit of community support, groups selected to perform in the festival make every effort to participate in as much of the day's schedule as they are able. Preference will be given to those groups who are able to commit to attending multiple timeslots in addition to their own.

NOTE: We are thrilled by the number of choirs that have applied to perform at GATHER! As of June 28, our lineup is full, however all further applicants will be added to our waitlist.

A final festival schedule will be communicated to all performing choirs by August 31.
